Muscle
spasms are involuntary muscle contractions caused by abnormal nerve or muscle
stimulation. These spasms can be caused by several factors such as nerve
damage, muscle damage, spinal cord injury, or neurological disorders.
The
main symptom of muscle spasms is muscle stiffness or involuntary muscle
contractions. There are four types of muscle spasms: flexor, adductor,
extensor, and spasms of the trunk.
To
treat muscle spasms, people can do self-care treatments such as stretching or
massaging the affected area, using ice or heat pads, and maintaining proper
posture. If these treatments are not effective, medical care such as
anti-inflammatory or pain-relieving topical creams and muscle relaxers can be
prescribed.
Though
muscle spasms are not that serious and tend to subside within a few days, it is
important to understand what
is a muscle spasm in detail. In some cases, the symptoms subside
and/or worsen, the reason for which could be various underlying causes.
Muscle
spasm can be treated with regular stretching the
area that has the muscle spasm, and it can also help improve or stop the spasm
from occurring.
